As the world community deals with the worst economic slowdown in decades, the suffering in the poorest countries of Africa is magnified. With dozens of students at Holy Cross College participating in this year's annual spring fund-raising event, the "Run for Hope" could not have a more crucial time.
"By all news accounts, the situation in Darfur is rapidly declining," commented event organizer Jay Dunne '07 former Assistant Director of the Center for Global Perspectives. " In retaliation for the International Criminal Court having issued an arrest warrant for Sudan's President Bashir for crimes against his own people, most relief agencies are being kicked out of the country. Luckily, Catholic Relief Services still has a presence there and we are able to send all the funds we raised directly to the war refugees."
